Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Petersburg lead occupational therapist honored with top companywide award

Cody Larue OEAAPETERSBURG, Va., May 3, 2018 – Cody LaRue, lead occupational therapist at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Petersburg, has been honored as one of only seven finalists out of more than 30,000 inpatient rehabilitation employees in the Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, network to receive the 2018 Outstanding Employee Achievement Award. Cody was honored yesterday at an awards GALA in Birmingham, Alabama.

Award finalists were selected based on their performance in four areas: contributions to extraordinary patient experience, team spirit and cooperation, commitment to continuous quality improvement and going above and beyond the call of duty. The process began with each of Encompass Health’s 130 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals honoring an employee of the year. Then, seven winners were named at the regional level.

“Cody strives to give our patients the best possible experience and goes all out to personalize the experience for each patient. He sets the standard by finding the area of interest for each patient and integrate it into their therapy,” said Louis Collier, CEO of Encompass Health Petersburg. “On a few occasions, he has allowed patients who were barbers to cut his hair TO inspire confidence that they could get back to work. Cody even took a patient who sold concessions at the Richmond Squirrels stadium to walk up and down the bleachers. He constantly thinks outside the box to ensure patient’s goals are met.”

Cody goes above and beyond to demonstrate The Encompass Health Way. He regularly PLAYS with his guitar for patients, learning their favorite songs to encourage interactions. He even learned a song in Bangladeshi for a co-worker who requested it. He always does what is right with a positive attitude, and reports issues to other departments in a timely and professional manner to make sure patient and family concerns are immediately addressed. He works with his staff to brainstorm through difficult situations and is always willing to help.

“There are so many examples of things Cody does that are above and beyond that it makes it seem like it’s his normal. Cody has been committed to the hospital since the day he started, and has always gone above and beyond for our patients, his colleagues and the hospital,” said Collier. “Cody LaRue is the Encompass Health Way.
