At Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Florence, we are committed to helping you regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury. Located in Florence and serving the Pee Dee area, we are a leading provider of inpatient rehabilitation for stroke, hip fracture, spinal cord injury and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions.
Using clinical collaboration and advanced technologies, we provide a personalized care plan designed to meet your unique needs and help you achieve your goals.
Our inpatient rehabilitation hospital uses an interdisciplinary team approach that includes physical, speech and occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dietitians and more, combined with our advanced technology and expertise, to help you achieve your goals. You will receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week while under the constant care of registered nurses, many of whom specialize in rehabilitation, and frequent independent private practice physician* visits.
Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies, as needed.
*The hospital provides access to independent physicians.

Leadership and Staff
Brian Nunn
Chief Executive Officer
Brian has more than 20 years of experience in leading hospital operations throughout the Carolinas. Most of his experience has been serving at the executive leadership level in acute care for both for-profit and not for profit organizations. Brian received his initial leadership training as an officer in the United States Navy. Prior to Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, he was employed by Novant Health and Community Health Systems as chief operating officer and chief nursing officer. He has extensive experience at developing and enhancing clinical programs, quality improvement programs and care management programs. Brian holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and master’s degrees in business administration and health care administration from Pfeiffer University.
Dr. Dean Lorenz
Medical Director
Dr. Lorenz comes to Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, Florence with more than 15 years of experience as a medical director of an inpatient rehabilitation hospital. He is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation specializing in spasticity management and electromyography (EMG).
Dr. Lorenz is an independent private practice physician.
Dana Browder
Director of Quality
As the director of quality, Dana is responsible for maintaining the hospital's compliance with state and federal standards, quality of patient care and patient safety. With expertise in nursing management and quality improvement, she brings almost 15 years of nursing experience to Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, Florence. Dana received an associate's degree in nursing from Central Carolina Technical College.
Lafreda Doctor
Director of Human Resources
Lafreda joined Encompass Health Florence, formerly HealthSouth, in 2018 with more than 20 years’ experience in Human Resources Management. She has a bachelor’s degree in human resource management and a master’s degree in business administration (MBA). Lafreda is a member of the national Society of Human Resources management. Lafreda and her husband have two children.
Catherine Edwards
Director of Therapy Operations
Catherine Edwards MHSA, OTR/L, studied at the Medical University of South Carolina for her undergraduate and graduate studies. She graduated in 1987 in occupational therapy and finished her master’s degree in health service administration in 1993. Catherine’s clinical background includes inpatient rehabilitation for direct patient care and healthcare management as well as 18 additional years’ of experience specializing in hand and upper extremity injuries.
Ann Spearman
Director of Case Management
Ann has worked in the healthcare field for 22 years. She has worked in many departments of Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, including four years as a marketing representative and two years in admissions. Ann joined the case management department in August 2009 and now oversees the daily operations of case management; ensuring services are delivered to meet the needs of patients and families. Ann received her bachelor's degree from Francis Marion College.
Ronda Sweet
Chief Nursing Officer
Ronda has 20 years of nursing acute care experience in profit and non-profit hospitals. She received her doctorate in nursing from Walden University in 2016 and is certified in executive nursing practice from the American Organization for Nursing Leadership. Ronda has experience in successfully leading teams to improve patient outcomes by providing evidence-based quality care. Ronda and her husband of 29 years have two sons and one daughter.
Jackie Young
Controller
Jackie has been the controller for Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, Florence since March 2015. In her role, she oversees the following departments, HIMS, purchasing, accounts payable and Payroll. Jackie has been in the healthcare environment within a hospital for more than 20 years holding various financial management positions. She is a graduate of Francis Marion University with a Bachelor of Science in business administration with emphasis in management. She was a member and actively involved with South Carolina HFMA for more than eight years and served on the board. Jackie has two daughters and resides in Lake City with her husband.
