Paul's story: returning to an active lifestyle

Paul Hernandez was never without a project. The 56-year-old father and U.S. Marine Corps. veteran could always be found working on something around the house and spending time with his son.

One evening, Paul experienced weakness in his right leg that caused him to fall. He went to bed to “sleep it off,” but when he woke up, he could not move his right side. He was also experiencing a facial droop and dizziness.

Paul was rushed to the hospital where doctors found he had had a stroke. He chose Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of San Antonio for rehabilitation to regain his independence. Upon admission, he was unable to move his right leg and arm and was unable to grasp with his right hand. In only 12 days at Encompass Health San Antonio, he was able to walk 300 feet independently and climb 12 stairs and was discharged to his home.

“The therapy is top notch, and nursing staff is fantastic! Everyone is friendly, professional and diligent,” Paul said. “Every day is something different to look forward to. It is evident that the staff enjoys what they do making the culture here awesome. I have been extremely pleased with my care from the VA hospital and Encompass Health San Antonio. More veterans deserve the opportunity to receive the care I have here at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of San Antonio.”
