Austin police corporal returns home after months in the hospital battling COVID-19

Austin Police Corporal Elijah Neely was recently discharged from Encompass Health Rehabilitation Center in Round Rock after a four month battle with COVID-19, and he was celebrated by friends, family, and his colleagues as he left the hospital. Both Elijah and his wife got sick with COVID-19 in February, and Elijah ended up in the ER before getting transferred to the COVID-19 ICU unit where he was put in a medically induced coma. He later was transferred to Encompass Health for intensive rehabilitation to help him recover and return home.

In an interview with KVUE, Shawana Neely, wife to Elijah, said the community has rallied around their family in support: “I cannot even tell you how much support they have shown us...I never lost faith. We knew this moment was coming, and now that it’s here, we’re just so super excited. I just can’t wait to get him home; I’m just looking forward to spending the rest of my life with him.”
