Carlos Ordonez was driving to work when he had to pull over with a flat tire. As he sat on the trunk of his car waiting for help, a car swerved into the emergency lane, hitting him head on. He said he flew in the air and could see his left leg fly away from him.
Ivy Russ, a case manager at our hospital, was on her way to work when she came upon the scene. Seeing the severity of the situation, she immediately pulled over to help. She grabbed a belt to use as a tourniquet, and comforted Mr. Ordonez until the EMT arrived.
A month later he discharged from the hospital and was admitted to Encompass Health Ocala, where Ivy was assigned as his case manager. She had no idea he was coming to Encompass Health or if had even survived. Mr. Ordonez did survive and thanks to his rehabilitation, he recently discharged from our hospital and has returned home. Congratulations, Mr. Ordonez. #LimbLossAwareness
