Neurological disorders are any disorders or conditions that affect the brain, nervous system or spinal cord. Some of the more common neurological conditions include Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), Guillain-Barré syndrome, Lou Gehrig’s disease and balance disorders. Neurological rehabilitation is designed to help treat patients with these conditions by designing individualized therapy plans to help improve movement, speech, swallowing, spasticity and cognitive abilities.
Rehabilitation strives to increase function, reduce debilitating symptoms and improve a patient’s quality of life. The types of rehabilitation treatments recommended depend on the areas of the body affected by the condition, as well as the patient’s individual goals.
Neuro rehabilitation is specifically designed for patients with a condition or injury related to the brain, spinal cord or nervous system. The program is supervised by a rehabilitation physician who will work with a patient’s care team to design a personalized therapy plan to allow the patient to return their highest level of independence and function and improve their overall quality of life. The care team includes physical, occupational and speech therapists, as well as case managers, nurses, dietitians and pharmacists. Treatments will vary depending on the patient, and individual goals are set at the time of admission to help patients get back to what matters most.
At Encompass Health rehabilitation hospitals, we know that every patient is different, and so is their recovery. Your care team at Encompass Health will design a plan unique to your specific goals and challenges. Our ultimate goal for every patient is to help them achieve their greatest level of independence, so they can return to those activities that matter most to them.
While at our rehabilitation hospital, you will receive at least three hours of therapy a day, five days a week. Round-the-clock nursing is available to help you with any of your medical needs, and you will have frequent physician visits throughout your stay.
Your multi-disciplinary care team, which includes physicians, therapists, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians and case managers, will design a care plan to meet you where you are in your recovery using a combination of physical, occupational and speech therapy.
Physical therapy helps rebuild your strength, and occupational therapy helps you relearn those everyday tasks, such as dressing, grooming, meal planning and more. Our speech therapists can help you with swallowing issues as well as cognitive and memory concerns.
