Receiving dialysis during an inpatient rehabilitation stay
To meet your unique needs during your inpatient rehabilitation stay, a number of Encompass Health facilities offer onsite hemodialysis (dialysis). Our experienced staff will closely monitor you throughout your stay to reduce the risk of complications such as electrolyte imbalances, fluid overload and other renal related problems.
Since dialysis is often done at a hospital or dialysis center, inpatient rehab patients typically must travel to another facility for treatment. The 3- to 5-hour treatment plus travel time disrupts therapy schedules, increases fatigue and can be stressful. Onsite dialysis eliminates those complications and makes dialysis treatment easy and convenient. It also enables you to receive dialysis and participate in your full therapy schedule while still allowing adequate time for rest and recovery.
Your dialysis experience could differ, depending on your Encompass Health location. Treatment may be scheduled in a hemodialysis suite or performed in the comfort of your room. Our state-of the-art Tablo hemodialysis systems are designed for comfort and convenience, allowing a gentler treatment experience.
Conditions that might benefit from dialysis
According to the National Kidney Foundation, dialysis is used in two situations.
Acute kidney injury
Acute kidney injury (kidney failure or damage that happens suddenly – within hours or days). If your condition is severe, dialysis may be needed for a short time.
Kidney failure
Kidney failure due to end-stage kidney disease. This occurs when only 10–15 percent kidney function remains and glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is less than 15 mL/min.
