At Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Hospital, a joint venture of Covenant Health and Encompass Health, we are committed to helping you regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury. Located in Knoxville and serving the east Tennessee area, we are a leading provider of inpatient rehabilitation for stroke, spinal cord injury, amputation, hip fracture and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions.
Our Knoxville inpatient rehabilitation hospital uses an interdisciplinary team approach that includes physical, speech and occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dietitians and more, combined with our advanced technology and expertise, to help you achieve your unique goals. You will receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week while under the constant care of registered nurses, many of whom specialize in rehabilitation, and frequent independent private practice physician* visits.
Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies, as needed.
*The hospital provides access to independent physicians.

Chief Executive Officer
Jennifer joined Encompass Health in 2021 as the CEO. She more than 27 years of clinical and leadership experience. Jennifer earned her bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from Eastern Kentucky University and her master’s degree in health services administration from University of St. Francis.
Medical Director
Dr. Hartman has been in practice for more than 20 years. Following completion of his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine, he completed a fellowship in brain injury rehabilitation, and he is board-certified in both areas. In addition, Dr. Hartman has extensive experience in neurorehabilitation including stroke and spinal cord injury.
Dr. Hartman is an independent private practice physician.
Director of Facilities Management
Jason joined Encompass Health in 2022 as the facilities management director. He has more than 15 years of healthcare experience including facilities management, environmental services, security and life safety. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in criminal psychology from the University of Tennessee.
Business Development Director
Delana joined Encompass Health in 2021 as business development director. She has more than 25 years of healthcare experience including program management, medical social work, case management, philanthropy and business development. She holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Tennessee and a master’s degree in health services administration from University of St. Francis.
Director of Pharmacy
Mason joined Encompass Health in January 2023 as the director of pharmacy. After graduating from Drake University with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2011, Mason completed a PGY1 pharmacy residency at Duke University Hospital followed by a PGY2 emergency medicine pharmacy residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He practiced as an emergency medicine clinical pharmacist for several years and was certified as a pharmacotherapy specialist. He has held a management position with a tele-pharmacy company for the past five years and has recent experience at a long-term acute care rehabilitation facility. Mason enjoys choral music and sings with the Knoxville Chorale Society and the Knoxville Chamber of Chorale.
Human Resources Director
Laura joined Encompass Health as the HR Director in 2020. She has more than 20 years of healthcare human resources experience. An Illinois native, she holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Indiana University and a Masters in Management from Indiana Wesleyan University.
Controller
Jarvis re-joined the Encompass Health team in December 2022. He has more than 19 years of various healthcare experience, including 14 years in healthcare accounting at both corporate and hospital levels. He has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Alabama A&M University. He began his career with Encompass Health home office where he served as a cash accountant, supply chain analyst and inpatient accountant. He also served as an accounting manager and controller at three different rehabilitation hospitals and as an ACFO at two acute care hospitals. He also volunteers with his fraternity Omega Psi Phi to help raise funds for scholarships and mentoring youth.
Director of Quality & Risk
Anne served as quality and perspective payment system coordinator for 13 years before accepting the role of director of quality and risk in December 2022. She has more than 32 years of experience in clinical and quality leadership. Anne received her bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Kentucky and her master’s degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee. She is also licensed as a senior psychological examiner.
Director of Case Management
April assumed the director of case management role in January 2023. She has more than 15 years of case management experience, including her previous role as coordinator of case management beginning in 2017. April graduated in 2003 from Tennessee Wesleyan College with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Director of Therapy Operations
Christy joined Encompass Health in 2021 as director of therapy operations. She brings more than 16 years of clinical and leadership experience. Originally from Knoxville, Christy holds a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a doctoral degree in physical therapy from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga.
Chief Nursing Officer
Mary Lou brings more than 20 years of healthcare management experience to Encompass Health. A Kentucky native, she graduated from Union College in Barbourville Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and then attended graduate school at Midway University where she graduated with a master’s in Business Administration. Mary Lou is a member of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) and holds a certification as a Healthcare Accreditation Certified Professional (HACP).
