Becoming a Patient

Patients who are being discharged from an acute care hospital, another rehabilitation facility, or who are struggling to remain independent at home, come to Rehabilitation Hospital of Bowie for customized rehabilitative care. Patients can contact us directly, be referred through our in-home evaluation service or by family, friends, employers or other healthcare professionals. We know navigating healthcare can be overwhelming and we can help.

What to Expect

We know that every patient is different, which is why we begin each patient’s rehabilitation journey by developing a treatment plan tailored to their needs.

Each treatment plan is based on personalized goals and includes intensive therapy at least three hours a day, five days per week, a dedicated team of staff and clinicians, physician-supervised care and, most importantly -- results.

Although each treatment plan is unique for each patient, the daily schedule follows the same basic routine. Each patient’s personalized therapy schedule is provided each evening so our patients know what to expect the following day.

Daily Schedule: Morning

There’s a lot of work to do, so the day starts early. One of our specially trained clinicians will stop by to help with the morning routine (bathroom assistance, bathing and getting dressed) and provide any needed treatments.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? That’s why our patients can expect a delicious and nutritious meal, which like all patient meals, is planned by their nutritionist and physician.

Through three hours of therapy a day, five days per week, our hospitals help patients recover quickly. Patients can expect two or three therapy sessions before lunch, one of the important differences between Encompass Health and a skilled nursing facility.

Daily Schedule: Afternoon

After the morning therapies, our patients need to be ready for an afternoon of rehabilitation, which means a healthy lunch.

To continue the success of the morning, our patients spend their afternoon in therapy sessions -- with necessary time for rest scheduled between sessions. Throughout the day, our specially trained nurses check in to provide patients with needed treatments and help them practice the activities they learned in therapy.

Daily Schedule: Evening

To round out your balanced nutrition, dinner is served. After a long day of hard work, we set aside the evening so our patients can visit with family and friends, relax, read or watch TV.

When it’s time for bed, our nursing staff helps each patient with grooming, putting on bedclothes and getting comfortable in bed.

During the night, we work hard to minimize interruptions. Our team checks on each patient throughout the night to provide any needed treatments. We won’t wake you unless it’s necessary, but if you need anything, help is just a call light away.

Transfer From Hospital

Encompass Health can work directly with your acute care hospital to facilitate a seamless transition into rehabilitative care. When transferring a patient, our expert rehabilitation liaisons perform preadmission screenings, including a chart review and discussions with healthcare personnel. We also meet with the patient and their family to answer questions and address pertinent information and concerns.

Home Evaluation

Helping our patients achieve superior outcomes often begins with our no-cost, in-home evaluation process. An expert rehabilitation clinician or therapist will visit you to assess whether rehabilitation can help with your specific condition or diagnosis. To request a home evaluation, contact one of our hospitals.

During Your Stay

Throughout a stay at an Encompass Health hospital, our patients receive routine visits from a physician experienced in rehabilitation and a dedicated case manager, who coordinates each patient’s care and ensures all needs are met and questions answered.
