Hospital happenings

Bill, a retired police officer who served the Braintree community for 34 years, had a surprise visit from his family and friends during his stay at Encompass Health Braintree. This was not just an ordinary visit—being from a family of front line workers, they decided to arrive with the Ladder Two truck from the Braintree Fire Department. Bill’s nephew, Fire Lieutenant Fred Viola, climbed up the firetruck’s ladder to see his beloved uncle. Bill was overjoyed to have a close family visit all the way from his third floor window. We would like to give a big thank you to Bill’s family and the Braintree Fire and Police Departments for helping make this wonderful moment possible.

Today is World Autism Awareness Day and April is also Autism Awareness Month. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as difficulty with sensory processing and attention. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated one in 54 children in the United States today (Autism Speaks, 2020). There is no cure for autism, but there are supports and services that help those with autism reach their highest level of independence and continue to be an active member in the community. At Braintree’s pediatric center, every month is Autism Awareness Month. Every day, the clinician at the pediatric center are regularly working with children who have been diagnosed with autism. Here we have occupational therapist, Sam, working with her friend, Jack. Jack spends the beginning of his session in the OT gym, receiving a combination of vestibular and proprioceptive input to support the self-regulation of his body, so he may better attend to his handwriting activities. Let’s celebrate Jack and the strides that he is making at Encompass Health!
