UK Athletic's Communications Director Shares Stroke Survivor Story

Earlier this year, Matt May, Associate Director of Athletics Communications with UK, experience a life-threatening stroke. After a week at UK Hospital, Matt spent two weeks in therapy at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital and he achieved his first major goal through rehabilitation.

Susan Hart named CEO of Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital

Susan Hart has been appointed as chief executive officer of Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital. In her position as CEO, Hart oversees all of the day-to-day operations, as well as patient care and quality, at the 232-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital located at 2050 Versallies Road in Lexington, Kentucky. She assumed the position in March 2022.

After spending more than 100 days in the hospital battling COVID-19, including more than 60 days on a ventilator, Tom Howser was recently discharged from Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital and can finally return home.

When Scott Reisinger was admitted to Cardinal Hill, he and his wife were concerned that they would not be able to celebrate their 50th anniversary this month. When they met 50 years ago, it was love at first sight and they were married within a few weeks. They have never been away from each other during any of their previous anniversaries, so Scott’s goal was to return home to his wife.

Dylan Dorroh was admitted to Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital into our disorders of consciousness program in a minimally conscious state, but quickly emerged and has made tremendous progress in all therapies. Following therapy our hospital, 27-year-old Dylan is now able to communicate, walk with assistance and complete self-care tasks with assistance. He looks forward to going home to see his four-month-old daughter.

On her first day of therapy, Judy’s swallowing was weak, and she had to be on a diet of thick liquids to prevent the fluids from leaking into her lungs and causing pneumonia. She needed help standing and required tapping on each leg to tell her which leg to move. Over the weeks she was at Cardinal Hill, a little hard work and a little sass, she is now walking with a cane and supervision to keep her safe but no physical assistance. She is also drinking her Coke and eating better food.

Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital recently transitioned to the new patient revenue cycle. During this transition from one scheduling system to another scheduling system, the team had to revert to the use of magnetic whiteboards for scheduling. Through it all, the team continuing to provide outstanding treatment to their patients. The team celebrated with a fiesta luncheon that saw people taking selfies, swinging at the piñata and leaving love notes on the whiteboards. All in all, the transition was a success and will allow for Cardinal Hill to continue to exceptional patient care in all departments across the hospital.

We had a week full of activities for National Patient Safety Awareness Week. Our staff was invited to wind their way around our Candy Land game board to complete their Patient Safety Week competencies and solve the mystery of what happened to Patient ZZTest in our very own Cardinal Hill Clue game.

After a few weeks of therapy with our staff, Michael began showing progress, inspired by the support of his children and care team.

Hilliard Cecil wasn’t going to let a stroke get in the way of fulfilling his dream to marry his fiancée Lana. While recovering at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital after his stroke, Hilliard mentioned his plans to the hospital staff. They quickly sprang into action to coordinate the wedding in the hospital’s beautiful atrium to help the couple carry out their dreams. “It’s just special to see these moments that are incredibly human and be a part of it. We're grateful. It’s a happy day,” stated Jarrett Millsaps, CEO of Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital.
