Stroke Rehabilitation in Our Shenandoah TX Hospital

At Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital Vision Park, stroke rehabilitation is what we do, and that makes a difference. If you or a loved one have experienced a stroke, choose our hospital as the next stop on your journey to recovery. Part of the nation’s largest provider of inpatient rehabilitation, we know stroke rehabilitation and are committed to helping you achieve your highest level of independence.

Our hospital works to provide the highest-quality care to each of our patients. By using an interdisciplinary team approach, which includes physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, rehabilitation physicians*, case managers, pharmacists and dietitians, our experts work together to create a customized care plan designed with each patient’s unique goals in mind.

Our Approach to Stroke Rehabilitation Therapies

By combining speech, occupational and physical therapy, our team of therapists will work with you to achieve your unique goals.

What's Included in Your Stroke Therapy?

Physical activities might include:

  • Motor-skill exercises to improve muscle strength and coordination
  • Speech therapy to improve speaking and swallowing
  • Training for using a walker, canes, wheelchair or ankle brace
  • Spasticity therapy uses exercises to ease muscle tension and help you regain fuller range of motion.
  • Activities of daily living allow patients to practice daily household and lifestyle tasks such as dressing, cooking and driving.

Cognitive activities might include:

  • Therapy can help you with lost cognitive abilities, such as memory, processing, problem-solving, social skills, judgment and safety awareness.
  • Therapy to help you regain lost abilities in listening, writing and comprehension
  • Activities of daily living exercises to help patients relearn signatures, medication management and handling finances

Where Should Stroke Rehabilitation Take Place?

Where you choose to continue your stroke recovery and rehabilitation matters. According to the adult stroke rehabilitation guidelines released by the American Heart Association, whenever possible, stroke patients should be treated at an inpatient rehabilitation facility rather than a skilled nursing facility.

“While at an inpatient rehabilitation facility, a patient participates in at least three hours of rehabilitation a day from physical, occupational and speech therapists. Nurses are continuously available and doctors typically visit daily. An inpatient rehabilitation facility may be a free-standing facility or a separate unit of a hospital.”**
