Paul's Story - Recovering from Stroke to Get Back to Teaching

As Paul sat quietly in his room at The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis waiting for his next round of therapy to start, he pulled what appeared to be a never-ending stack of handmade cards written by his students out of a bag that was delivered by his daughter, Kristen.
Jeff Reese named Area CEO within Encompass Health’s Central Region

Jeff Reese has been appointed as area chief executive officer within Encompass Health’s Central Region. In his position as area CEO, Reese will oversee all of the day-to-day operations and patient care and quality at two Missouri hospitals – Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of St. Louis in Central West End and Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of St. Louis in St. Peters – and the Rehabilitation Institute of Southern Illinois in Shiloh.

We're celebrating patient successes during National Stroke Awareness Month! Congratulations to former patient Leena Ruedin, pictured here with her husband, Richard Ruedin, and dog, Mishie Lou. After a long week at work, Leena, a 37-year-old regulatory affairs contractor, and her husband, Richie, were enjoying a quiet Valentine’s Day evening at home in O’Fallon, Mo., until the evening took a sudden turn, changing their lives forever.

The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis has partnered with Operation Food Search to promote reducing the risk of stroke through healthy food options as well as provide the community with stroke awareness and education. Donations will be collected throughout the month of May.

For American Stroke Month, the Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis educated our employees, patients and the community about lowering risk factors for stroke. Audra, our physical therapy manager, provided education on stroke risks, blood pressure screening and stroke risk assessment scorecards to TRISL employees and visitors.

Bryon Jefferson, 51, was enjoying an evening out to dinner with his family in St. Charles, Missouri when he and his 10-year-old son spotted a photo booth inside the restaurant. Wanting to preserve the memory, the two decided to take some silly pictures. “All of the sudden, I felt terrible pressure in my chest and I couldn’t breathe,” Bryon said. “My son ran out of the booth to get help; he saved my life.”
