At Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Scottsdale, we are committed to helping you regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury. Located in Scottsdale, we serve the greater Phoenix area as a leading provider of inpatient rehabilitation for stroke, brain injury and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions.

Using clinical collaboration and advanced technologies, we provide a personalized care plan designed to meet your unique needs and help you achieve your goals.

Our inpatient rehabilitation hospital uses an interdisciplinary team approach that includes physical, speech and occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dietitians and more, combined with our advanced technology and expertise, to help you achieve your goals. You will receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week while under the constant care of registered nurses, many of whom specialize in rehabilitation, and frequent independent private practice physician* visits.

Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies, as needed.

*The hospital provides access to independent physicians.

Hospital happenings

Janet Martin was not able to attend her daughter's wedding in person, so Hannah Vyhmeister, her occupational therapist at Encompass Health Scottsdale helped her get dressed, don her pearls and do her makeup, so she could be present over Zoom for her daughter’s special day!

LARRY NIEMANN

Chief Executive Officer

Larry brings 23 years of healthcare management experience to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Scottsdale.

Larry brings 23 years of healthcare management experience to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Scottsdale. He also served as the previously CEO at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of East Valley for two years and has held various hospital administration roles within the CHI Health System based in Omaha, Nebraska. He is a member of the American Congress of Healthcare Executives. Larry attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for his undergraduate studies as well as Purdue University for his master’s in business administration.

Keith Cunningham
KEITH CUNNINGHAM, M.D.

Medical Director

A graduate of the University of Florida, Dr. Cunningham completed his residency in internal medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences University.

A graduate of the University of Florida, Dr. Cunningham completed his residency in internal medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences University. He became a member of the American College of Physicians and board certified in 1997. He has been an active member at Encompass Health since 1999 and has served as medical staff president since 2004. Dr. Cunningham has served on several local hospital committees and acts as an associate preceptor for medical students. His interests include the integration of the multidisciplinary medicine rehab approach to the compromised patient to improve outcomes.

Dr. Cunningham is an independent private practice physician.

LINDA AMBACHER

Chief Nursing Officer

As chief nursing officer, Linda Ambacher leads the nursing team, respiratory care practitioners and the clinical dietitians in the hospital.

As chief nursing officer, Linda Ambacher leads the nursing team, respiratory care practitioners and the clinical dietitians in the hospital. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Kean University, her master's degree in business administration from Centenary College and her master's degree in nursing administration from Independence University. Linda has experience providing care and leadership in a variety of medical, surgical and procedural areas within the acute care setting. Most recently Linda served in the role of chief nursing officer at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in Chester, New Jersey before relocating to Arizona. As chief nursing officer for Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Scottsdale, Linda looks forward to providing high quality, evidence based, outcome focused care that exceeds our patients’ expectations.

Barlas Buyuktimkin, PharmD, Ph.D.

Director of Pharmacy

Barlas Buyuktimkin joined Encompass Health in October 2011.

Barlas Buyuktimkin joined Encompass Health in October 2011. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 2005 with a doctorate of pharmacy (PharmD) degree and received his second doctorate (Ph.D.) in pharmaceutical chemistry from the University of Kansas in 2011. He serves on several local hospital committees and is an adjunct assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Midwestern University. Barlas has six peer-reviewed publications, has authored two book chapters and holds one U.S. patent.

Lisa joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Scottsdale in April 2007.

Lisa joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Scottsdale in April 2007. Lisa graduated from Arizona State University in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She was an audit manager for seven years with Deloitte & Touche and has more than 15 years of controller experience.

Director of Plant Operations

John has more than 30 years of experience in electrical and mechanical maintenance.

John joined Encompass Health in July 2009. He has more than 30 years of experience in electrical and mechanical maintenance. John obtained his electrical apprenticeship/journeyman in Pennsylvania. His experience includes being a chief building engineer for commercial and high-rise structures in the greater Phoenix area.

GREG NORMAN

Director of Quality and Risk

Greg joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Scottsdale in October 2015.

Greg joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Scottsdale in October 2015. As the director of quality and risk, Greg oversees the patient experience and policy compliance. He also supervises the patient assessment standards coordinator and chairs several committees. Greg switched careers from banking to healthcare in 2008 when he went back to graduate school to pursue a career in occupational therapy. He’s earned a bachelor's degree in finance from Arizona State University, master's degree in business administration from University of Phoenix and a master's degree in occupational therapy from A.T. Still University. His career focus has always included serving those in need, and providing recommendations for best practices to senior leadership.

Pamela Schmidt
Pamela Schmidt OTR/L, MSOT

Director of Therapy Operations

Pamela began her therapy career with Encompass Health Scottsdale in January 2012.

Pamela began her therapy career with Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Scottsdale in January 2012. She started out as a staff occupational therapist and worked her way up to a lead manager before being promoted to her current position of director of therapy. She has a passion working with patients with neurological impairment and her career focus has been in the post-acute/rehabilitation side of therapy. She also helped initiate the stroke support group at Encompass Health Scottsdale. Pamela found her interest in occupational therapy by teaching gymnastics to children with special needs. She achieved her Bachelor of Science in psychology from Arizona State University and her master’s degree in occupational therapy from Midwestern University. She is a proud native of Arizona.
