100-year-old war veteran, Lawrence McCauley, returns home after a stroke nearly a month ago

Lawrence McCauley, a 100-year-old World War II veteran from Central Ohio has lived through some challenging days including fighting alongside heroes for freedom and independence on D-Day, on Omaha Beach during the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. As life has slowed down, Lawrence has most recently spent his days fighting for his own independence at Mount Caramel Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Encompass Health.

Lawrence came to Mount Carmel Rehabilitation Hospital in January to begin therapy after suffering a Stroke. Since that time, he’s made progress by improving his balance, along with making steps with the assistance of our therapists. Lawrence is the most decorated World War II veteran still living. In January of 2020, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor, which is the highest honor the French can give a foreigner. His impact didn’t stop there when his service ended. Later, Lawrence became a banker, and through this role he connected with John McConnell in 1955 and the two were instantly connected, given they were both WWII veterans. Lawrence approved McConnell’s initial loan request, and McConnell eventually went on to found Worthington Industries and the Columbus Blue Jackets. The two were lifelong friends.
