On Nov. 10, 2018, Eric Thyr suffered a gunshot wound to the head after someone accidentally discharged a firearm. He had to receive neurosurgery at UMC and had a large portion of his skull removed to relieve brain swelling. He was in a coma for two weeks after the surgery. Once his condition stabilized, he need help to rebuild his strength and live independently again.
He was admitted to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Henderson some six weeks after his injury to do just that. His goals upon admission included small daily tasks, such as being able to stand and go to the bathroom by himself. His physical therapist helped him set a goal of walking 500 feet and returning home safely.
Though he was very weak, he had physical, occupational, and speech therapy several times a week to help him achieve those goals. When Eric first began participating in speech therapy in December 2018, he was unable to communicate his name or any information about himself or his wants and needs. At discharge, Eric was able to say his name and express other important personal information. He was also able to walk and care for himself. He continued outpatient therapy at the hospital after his return home, and was able to hold full conversations by the end of his outpatient treatment.
In April 2019, Eric was well enough to return to his work at a commercial helicopter company part-time. “Without the wonderful staff at Encompass Health Henderson, I would not be where I am today,” he said. “I can’t thank them all enough.”
