At the University of Iowa Health Network Rehabilitation Hospital, our staff utilizes group activities to improve patient outcomes and emotional growth after a traumatic event. Our speech and occupational therapy teams joined forces to provide a gardening group in our courtyard.
Prior to planting, the group researched types of plants for the environment, which plants work well together, how to plant them and how to care for them. Some patients focused on standing tolerance while others worked on arm strength. This event brought so much joy to the patients, and also made the courtyard more beautiful!
