At UVA Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, we are committed to helping you regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury. Located in Charlottesville, we serve the surrounding area as a leading provider of inpatient rehabilitation for stroke, spinal cord injury and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions.
Using clinical collaboration and advanced technologies, we provide a personalized care plan designed to meet your unique needs and help you achieve your goals.
Our inpatient rehabilitation hospital uses an interdisciplinary team approach that includes physical, speech and occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dietitians and more, combined with our advanced technology and expertise, to help you achieve your goals. You will receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week while under the constant care of registered nurses, many of whom specialize in rehabilitation, and frequent independent private practice physician* visits.
Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies, as needed.

Area Chief Executive Officer
Vivian joined Encompass Health in April, 2019. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing in Minnesota. Over the last decade Vivian has provided leadership for a healthcare services company by serving roles such as CEO and division vice president; regional senior director of sales and marketing. Her management provide support to clinical and administrative efforts, while maintaining positive customer relations, and her motivation comes from working with a dynamic team who is dedicated to providing an exceptional patient experience. In February 2022 Vivian was promoted to area CEO for the Richmond and Petersburg Encompass Health hospitals.
Medical Director, UVA HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital
Dr. Alfano has been the Medical Director at UVA Encompass Health since the hospital opened in 1998. He has published scholarly articles in multiple peer reviewed medical journals, is actively involved in teaching residents and medical students and was honored to be ranked in the top 10 percent of all Encompass Health medical directors for patient satisfaction in 2011. He currently attends on the Orthopedic, General and Geriatric Rehabilitation services at UVA Encompass Health in addition to his role as Medical Director. Dr. Alfano graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and completed his residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Nassau County Medical Center in New York.
Dr. Alfano is an independent private practice physician.
Director Therapy Operations
Rob Dixon, DPT, began his career holding multiple roles in corporate marketing and finance prior to joining UVA Encompass Health as a physical therapist. He gained more than 10 years’ clinical experience with a focus on neuro rehabilitation and the related technologies before moving into the role as director of therapy. Rob holds clinical certifications including neuro-rehabilitation, wound care and lymphedema, and has contributed to the development of the wound care and lymphedema programs for UVA/HealthSouth along with the national training program for the partial weight bearing treadmill trainer, the AutoAmbulater. Rob is an adjunct faculty member with the physical therapy department at Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences at Mary Baldwin University. Rob earned a bachelor's degree in marketing and a master’s degree in business administration from Radford University as well as a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Human Resources Director
Before joining UVA Encompass Health in 2021, Suzannah lead human resources teams in skilled nursing and corporate retail. While being a clinician is not her calling, Suzannah is passionate about being of support and service to “the people who take care of the people.” She is a graduate of Sweet Briar College and holds leadership positions with local non-profit volunteer and humanitarian groups.
Business Development Director
Jennifer joined UVA Encompass Health in 2021 bringing more than 20 years of marketing and business development experience to her role. Previously Jennifer held positions in behavioral healthcare and hearing healthcare. She is a graduate of Radford University and is passionate about partnering with the community to provide value and service to patients as well as all community partners.
Controller
Jennifer is a graduate of Longwood University where she earned a degree in business administration with a concentration in finance and minor in economics. She started her career with Encompass Health in 2004 as an administrative assistant. Soon thereafter, she was promoted to accountant. In 2014, she took on the role as controller for the Richmond location. She transitioned to controller of UVA Encompass Health in 2021.
Chief Nursing Officer
Bridgett began her nursing career at a long-term acute care hospital. She later transitioning to critical care with a focus on pulmonary and infectious etiologies. She joined UVA Encompass Health in 2017 and has since served in various nursing leadership roles. Bridgett serves as a member of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, American Nurses Association and the American Organization of Nursing Leadership.
Director of Quality & Risk
Michael joined UVA Encompass Health in 1998 as the senior OT on the spinal cord/orthopedic injuries team and lead therapist for the seating clinic. In 2008, he transitioned to the role of Director of Quality and Risk Management where he is responsible for maintaining the hospital’s readiness for accreditation surveys, facilitating performance improvement, addressing complaints and managing the physician credentialing process.
Director of Case Management
Lydia joined Encompass Health in 2010 as a certified nursing assistant. She has since served as unit secretary, case management assistant, and case manager before moving into her current role as director of case management. Lydia is a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
