Medical Director
Dr. Barnes is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Medicine and sub-specialty certified in spinal cord Injury medicine and brain injury medicine.
Dr. Barnes is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Medicine and sub-specialty certified in spinal cord Injury medicine and brain injury medicine. Following graduation from medical school and a family practice internship, he served in the U.S. Navy as an undersea and diving medical officer for four years. He completed his PM&R residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota and then returned to his native Arizona and has practice PR&R at Valley of the Sun for more than 20 years.
Dr. Barnes is an independent private practice physician.
Facilities Management Director
Benjamin is a seasoned professional with a multifaceted career spanning more than eight years in the healthcare industry. He has excelled in his role as a director of facilities management, showcasing his leadership abilities and dedication to optimizing healthcare environments. His expertise extends beyond healthcare with over 15 years of hands-on experience in handyman services and painting. He has honed his skills in maintaining and enhancing a wide range of properties, from rental units and residential homes to commercial real estate and medical facilities.
Chief Nursing Officer
Brenna began her nursing career with Encompass Health in 2013. She has served in a variety of clinical roles including wound care coordinator and RN manager prior to becoming chief nursing officer of Encompass Health Valley of the Sun in January 2022. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Chamberlain College of Nursing, is a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse, and is wound care certified.
Human Resources Director
Danette has been a part of the Encompass Health family since 1994. She worked in various positions with the hospital while completing her bachelor’s degree in human resource management. She received her certification in Professional HR in 2009. The various positions she held within Encompass Health have helped as she recruits for openings and manages all aspects of employee relations. Danette's positive attitude is an effective tool whether she is interviewing potential employees or providing general orientation.
Controller
Katy joined Encompass Health in April 2009. She has a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Phoenix and is a licensed CPA. Katy has 20 years of accounting experience in various industries including non-profit, transportation and construction. She enjoys working with staff to develop operational efficiencies at Valley of the Sun. This enables the hospital to continue to provide superior patient care and see positive patient outcomes.
Director of Pharmacy
Daniel Lim started with Encompass Health Valley of the Sun Rehabilitation Hospital in February 2022. He has been a registered pharmacist since 2003. Daniel has diversified pharmacy experience which includes military hospital, sterile compounding, mail order and community pharmacy. He served as an active-duty pharmacist in the U.S. Air Force for nine and a half years and continues to serve today in the reserves. Daniel received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago and Doctor of Pharmacy from Creighton University.
Director of Case Management
Liz joined Encompass Health in 1996 and is a certified rehabilitation registered nurse. During her career she has held a variety of clinical and management positions, which have given her the experience to understand and respond to patients’ concerns, which is a key element in the continual effort to improve the rehabilitation experience for each patient.
Director of Therapy Operations
Megan Shearer joined the team at Encompass Health Valley of the Sun Rehabilitation Hospital in 2007 after completion of her master’s degree in speech-language pathology at the University of Arizona. Prior to becoming director of therapy operations in 2022, Megan was the lead speech pathologist for seven years. She strived to develop autonomy, advocacy and leadership skills in SLPs, graduate students and the therapy team as a whole. She is passionate about continuing to grow her clinical skills, mentoring employees and fostering a culture of growth and development within her staff.
Director of Quality & Risk
Rachel received her occupational therapy degree from Boston University and began working for Encompass Health in 2004.

She obtained a master’s degree in health professions education from Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ in 2007. Rachel became Neuro Dynamic Therapy Certified in 2004 and has a passion for working with stroke and spinal cord injured patients. She began working with the reducing employee injury/safe patient handling program in 2013 by implementing and sustaining the program at Valley of the Sun as well as teaching at a corporate level. She has a passion for quality and evidence based care.
