At New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland, a Joint Venture of Maine Medical Center and Encompass Health, we are committed to helping you regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury. Located in Portland, we are the only freestanding full-service inpatient rehabilitation hospital in the state of Maine. We are a leading provider of rehabilitation after stroke, brain injury and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions.
Using clinical collaboration and advanced technologies, we provide a personalized care plan designed to meet your unique needs and help you achieve your goals.
Our inpatient rehabilitation hospital uses an interdisciplinary team approach that includes physical, speech and occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dietitians and more, combined with our advanced technology and expertise, to help you achieve your goals. You will receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week while under the constant care of registered nurses, many of whom specialize in rehabilitation, and frequent independent private practice physician* visits.
Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies, as needed.

Chief Executive Officer
Jeanine became the chief executive officer of New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland (NERHP) in 2012 thanks to her base of knowledge, experience and commitment to superior clinical outcomes. She has more than 30 years of experience in healthcare operations, finance and accounting. In 2001, Jeanine began her tenure at NERHP as the chief financial officer/controller and soon was asked to add Encompass Health Concord Rehabilitation Hospital to her financial responsibilities. Jeanine holds a degree in accounting, has worked in both the public and private sectors with eleven years in manufacturing including chief financial officer for five years. She also worked for six years as finance manager for Aetna Insurance (formerly NYLCare) of Maine.
Medical Director
Dr. Morrione completed a geriatric fellowship at Maine Medical Center and joined New England Rehabilitation Hospital in 2008. A graduate of George Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Morrione completed his residency in family medicine at Maine Medical Center. He is a member of the American Geriatric Society and is board-certified in family medicine and in geriatric medicine. Dr. Morrione is also on staff at Maine Medical Center.
Dr. Morrione is an independent private practice physician.
Associate Medical Director
Dr. Savage comes to us from his physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Savage is a graduate of Hamilton College and earned his Doctor of Medicine from SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Director of Pharmacy
Kate began her pharmacy career at New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland in January 2014. She was a clinical staff pharmacist until 2019, when she joined our leadership team as the director of pharmacy. She has clinical experience in psychiatry and is board certified in geriatrics. Kate also precepts pharmacy students from the University of New England College of Pharmacy, her alma mater.
Human Resources Director
Mary Cote joined NERHP in December of 2011. She has more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare field with 27 years dedicated to the human resources area. Mary comes to NERHP from a Portland, Maine, rehabilitation and residence facility where she held a senior leadership position with primary responsibility for the human resource function. She attended the University of Southern Maine and holds certifications as a Senior Professional Human Resources (SPHR), personnel law, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) General Industry Safety and Health. Mary and her husband live in Auburn, Maine.
Director of Case Management
Laura came to New England Rehabilitation Hospital in October 2018 with many years of case management experience in both the public and private sector. She holds a B.A. in Criminology from the University of Southern Maine, and a Master’s Social Work Degree from the University of New England. Laura is a proud Navy Mom. In her free time she enjoys spending time outdoors and offshore fishing with her family.
Business Development Director
Cathy joined our leadership team as business development director in early 2021 with more than 20 years of healthcare experience, as both an occupational therapist and case manager at NERHP. Having worked across the continuum of post-acute healthcare in Maine, she has a deep knowledge and established relationships in the community. Cathy is focused on leading our admissions team to create opportunities for patients to achieve their best possible outcomes. She earned her bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from the University of New England.
Director of Facilities Management
Paul joined New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland's leadership team in March 2020 with more than 10 years of healthcare experience. He has spent time working in the business office, quality department and most recently overseeing the materials management. Before his time in healthcare, Paul spent over a decade running a successful small business in residential and commercial construction.
Director of Quality and Risk Management
Torey joined New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland as director of quality and risk management in September 2019. She brings more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare field. Her career has included direct patient care as well as nursing and quality leadership roles. Torey excels in all areas of quality, from facilitating positive patient and family experiences to quality improvement processes and government communications. She received her BSN from St. Joseph’s College.
Controller
Jim has nearly 20 years financial management and leadership experience with both for-profit and not-for-profit healthcare entities in New Hampshire and Maine. Prior to entering the healthcare sector, Jim held the chief financial officer/treasurer position for two privately owned manufacturing companies. He has served on multiple governing boards for non-profit organizations, advising and supporting their financial position. Jim holds an undergraduate degree in business administration and accounting from St. Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine and earned his MBA from Southern New Hampshire University.
Chief Nursing Officer
Vicki joined the team at New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland (NERHP) in 2017 and has more than 13 years of inpatient rehabilitation nursing experience. Prior to becoming CNO, she had eight years of nursing leadership experience in management and supervisory roles. Vicki is a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) and a member of the Association for Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN). She received her master's degree in nursing and her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University of Mary in 2020. Vicki has special interests in nursing quality and education and in 2021 she was the recipient of the NERHP leadership award.
Director of Therapy Operations
Laura joined New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland in 2011. She has held positions as a staff physical therapist as well as physical therapy team leader. In 2020 Laura became the director of therapy operations. Prior to joining the team at NERH she had experience in acute care, skilled nursing, and other acute rehabilitation settings. She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy. Since 2006, Laura has been a board certified specialist in neurologic physical therapy through the American Board of Physical Therapy specialties. In 2018 Laura received the employee of the year award for NERH as well as the outstanding employee achievement award for the northeast region of Encompass Health. In addition to clinical practice, Laura enjoys teaching and has provided guest lab instruction and lecturing at the University of New England.
